Episode 015 Cinematographer Jeremy Rogers

Jeremy Rogers is an accomplished cinematographer and filmmaker based in Austin, Texas, with Two decades of experience capturing compelling visual stories across the globe. Known for his intuitive approach to storytelling and his ability to create human-centered narratives, Jeremy’s work spans a variety of genres, including narrative films, documentaries, music videos, and commercial projects.

Jeremy’s journey into filmmaking began with a passion for illustration and painting, which evolved into a love for the moving image during his time at Virginia Commonwealth University and later graduate studies at the University of Texas. His career took a pivotal turn when he worked on Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, where he honed his craft alongside master filmmakers and solidified his commitment to impactful storytelling.

His documentary work has taken him to some of the world's most complex and emotionally charged environments, from capturing the resilience of Rwandan communities to spending three years embedded in the West Bank documenting the life of a Palestinian farmer. Jeremy’s unique ability to navigate sensitive situations with humility and respect has earned him a reputation as a storyteller who brings light to untold stories with authenticity and depth.

In addition to his documentary work, Jeremy has contributed as a director of photography on projects such as Netflix’s Full Swing and National Geographic’s Science Fair. His work balances technical mastery with an eye for raw emotion, offering a signature cinematic style that elevates every project.

Whether behind the camera or mentoring aspiring filmmakers, Jeremy is driven by a passion for creating stories that connect, inspire, and challenge audiences. His Austin roots and global perspective make him a versatile and sought-after cinematographer for both independent and commercial productions.

When he’s not behind the camera, Jeremy enjoys spending time with his wife, Lydia, and their two children, finding beauty in the simple, everyday moments that inspire his art.

When I first began filmmaking 25 years ago, John Russell gave me a shot. It's how everything began. I was his photo assistant and soon began shooting video over his shoulder. This build my reel and launched several opportunities that landed my first few gigs in documentary filmmaking. In this podcast we discuss how John got his start in photography as well as his philosophy of shooting. "When young folks, or anybody for that matter, asks me what the secret is to being a “successful” photographer, I answer with what’s become my mantra, ”It’s all about light and relationships.”
