Over the past 10 years I have collected a wide range of books as I’ve built a business and learn how to make movies. Over time the these books seem to continue to rise to the top as people ask for references. Enjoy

1. Producing with Passion; Making movies that change the world.

This is a new arrival that I found on Amazon. It’s probably the best book I have found yet. The core of this book is documentary but it is just as applicable to feature films indi style. If you want to build a movement this is a great tool. I already have gone back to it 2 or 3 time in the past week since I bought it.

2. From Reel to Deal; Dov Simons

10 years ago I went to Denver and did a 2 day seminar with Dov Simons. I thought it would be fun to listen to but it was beyond that. Dov is one of the most entertaining and talented teachers I have every learned from. Ironically 5 years later I found myself living in LA 2 miles from his office. When I began working with Rick Warren I visited him for some advise and he was incredibly generous with his time. His book is a must have for anyone who would like to learn about film A-Z in one read. I have suggested this book literally hundreds of times. Most of the guys around me have it on there desk as a reference.

3. The Art of the Start; Guy Kawasaki

Guy was one of the first hires at Apple and is a start up genius. If your developing a film or starting a media company this is the book I use over and over to focus my ideas. I have it on both audio and text. Highlighter look out your got your work cut our for you. If you want to dial in your film pitch get this book and look up his free video on youtube.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIjHmSGqrfs&p=2C3886E067C55365&playnext=1&index=3

4. Story by Robert Mckee

This one is the bible on story. You can say what you want but he knows his stuff. I took his class before I wrote my last movie and it was a huge help. This book breaks down the components of story extremely well. The key to this book is you have to give it time and mental work. As the book states, story is incredibly hard to create. You can’t cheat the process. No book creates turn key scripts!

5. The Purpose Driven Life; Rick Warren

I had to add this one in here. About once a year I go back to this book and go through it. It’s the basics on life and always helps me remember whats important. The scripture alone is worth the read.
